However, if he spends more time out of the spotlight, he'll lose his commanding presence as the center of focus, much to the detriment of his future campaigns. If you're a TV personality (which most politicians are), you should always keep the spotlight onto you, unless you're retiring.

By "shit hits the fan" I was referring to communist indoctrination camps and violent repression of speech. A civil war will result in a lot of shit for half a decade or so, but in the long term, it will be good. But if an oppressive communist regime takes hold, we'll have decades upon decades of violent repression.
