Cut out the children and the super old, and you’re left with more like 4%. Since violent crimes almost always lead to convictions and imprisonment, this very clearly matches with 2% of the population being incarcerated and matches the statistics of people in prison by race: about 40% of prison population are black. In other words, there’s more than enough of a pool of black males in the general population that could make up the prison population, so there’s no error or contradiction in the statistics here.
So out of 2% prison population out of US population * 40% black population out of prison population =~ 1% black population out of US population.
So in reality, it’s more like 1% of the population commit 40% of the crime.
