To be more complete: an index fund is a mutual fund that tracks the value of an index by consisting of components of that index. You can't buy shares of the Dow or S&P or Nasdaq, but you can buy DIA, SPDR, and QQQ.
Its a good way to park money you want to track with the value of the market (decent inflation hedge that way).
Its the only thing they can do in their situation. Its called buying the dip (or in this case, shorting the peak) to average down. If they own shorts at $10/share and $300/share, they can average out and get clear at $155/share.
Of course if it gets driven back up over $300 (around where this madness started) they will be double-fucked.

I wish I could find an old essay I read from a retired Colonel. It was in the vein of why the military would comply with gun confiscation orders.
He argued that the military would never refuse an illegal order (like gun confiscation) because their training focused on discipline and following orders and never even broaches the topic of how to resist an illegal order. He sited a bunch of times throughout history where service members obeyed illegal orders, including blatant ones.
In the military, obedience and discipline are more important than oaths and loyalty.
