While I know they’re often miss used, I think the use of adverbs like “honestly“, “seriously“, and “literally” are meant to preface against something surprising or extreme being taken as hyperbole or metaphor. YouTube is not profitable, and Alphabet is fine with that. It is their “moat” protecting them from having a true competitor in the user-uploaded video space and gives them a secondary set of users to mine data from and retarget Google ads to. The only company I could see competing would be Amazon reworking Amazon Video to focus on user-content and changing up their contract structures to utilize AWS storage that clients are paying for but not fully using. I don’t think that would be much better though, and I don’t see them having the motivation. Facebook would have the motivation but not the means to sink that much capital into that scale of video storage. Facebook Video is trash as it is, and as a company they are an even worse platform to be on.
