This method is pretty much bullet-proof. I use it with Calibre and a Kobo e-reader, though most of the time I'm reading physical copies
I use hexchat as my IRC client. There are a few curveballs when trying to get this set up, but once you learn how I can find any book in a matter of seconds.
Curveballs:
- when downloading Hexchat, they make it seem like it's paid but that's only a donation request
- when first connecting to IRChighway, you have to click edit and check the "accept invalid SSL certificates" box
