This method is pretty much bullet-proof. I use it with Calibre and a Kobo e-reader, though most of the time I'm reading physical copies

https://archive.ph/myGLQ

I use hexchat as my IRC client. There are a few curveballs when trying to get this set up, but once you learn how I can find any book in a matter of seconds.

Curveballs:

  • when downloading Hexchat, they make it seem like it's paid but that's only a donation request
  • when first connecting to IRChighway, you have to click edit and check the "accept invalid SSL certificates" box

It's not for everyone but I love it

This is the real reason liberals hate Trump:

he's confident and happy with a beautiful healthy family

It's kinda funny, these people are so "objective" they're unwilling to have faith in God...and yet when I watched the Crash Course Astronomy series, one of their "models" for the eventual fate of the universe (t ~= 10^93) is this massive cope about the universe being a certain "energy level" before it bumps to the next and the world renews. Lmao

Edit: The other 2 theories are actually pretty cool: (1) space-time keeps expanding til it rips itself apart, or (2) all stars die until there's nothing but black holes left and eventually those leak mass and die too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDF-N3A60DE&list=PL8dPuuaLjXtPAJr1ysd5yGIyiSFuh0mIL&index=46

I usually buy books on abebooks and eBay, btw. I think it's cheaper and I hate Amazon anyway (only use it to look up editions and publishing info). www.ISBNsearch.org is also cool

Sweet, I remember diagramming sentences in 8th grade. It was fun and I was really good at it.

Once you start reading what they actually wrote, and you know how they spoke, it makes a huge difference in understanding.

absolutely. This is why Orwell focused so much on language in 1984. JRR Tolkien was a Catholic and philologist and it shows in the quality of his work (LOTR and Silmarillion).

This reminds me of something I was looking at the other day. The guy turned out to be a philologist and (if I'm remembering correctly), was the first to propose the Urspache proto-language. I have no idea what I was looking and what prompted me to look up the name/author.

Did you know every major work of philosophy from before Christ until after Newton was written in Latin?

Ok now I'm excited. I already understand the value of reading works in original translation (case in point: Plato and philosophy especially), so if I can learn Latin this will be invaluable to me.

Besides, once you start reading Latin, your going to have to learn Greek

fuck, haha. I only have so much time before I die, and so many great books to read.

And it expands your mind and all of a sudden you can landmark where we are in our civilization and what we need to do.

Yeah man, classical literature and history are so important.

Random, but I've never understood people who bash fiction. Humans have told stories for thousands of years.

Awesome man, thanks. If I'm interpreting what you mean by grammar and "classical education," that's probably more what I was used to with Spanish (at one point I was almost fluent learning from the book and speaking in the classroom).

You're absolutely right about grammar. I've been meaning to review my HS grammar books the first chance I get (unless you know a better one?). How to Read a Book sounds cool and useful.

MMA / UFC

I'm glad you mentioned this. I've always dismissed them out of hand, but this video was enough to instantly turn me into a fan of McGregor.
