Reminds me of another classic technique, which is to unnecessarily complicate something to make it easier to take advantage of the non-experts.
The most recent example I came across is "compensated balances" for bank loans to businesses. The bank will loan you a given amount, but require you to keep some of it (the so called "compensating balance) at the bank. The only real purpose is to quote an interest rate that sounds better than it really is.
I'm sure if I looked closer at auto loans and mortgages you'd find the same shit.
