do you mean my actual junk pile Kindle DX, or a reader on my computer? On Windows I use SumatraPDF to read PDFs and STDU Viewer for epubs and stuff. I don't think they are open source but I am also quite sure they don't leak data. Even if they did, you can firewall them on Windows and prevent them from getting network access since they don't need it.
On Linux, I use open source programs for the same thing. They don't make network connections. System monitor confirms that as well.

wrong. I have a Kindle DX I got from an ewaste pile, I plugged it in to my computer, and I loaded my PDFs and epubs onto it. it doesn't connect to anything or update my books. Even if it did, you can just open an ebook on your computer like normal and it's not going to update your books or something like that.
