It's so strange living here in Japan.
I see the news of the US/Europe, everyone being so strict: calling the police on people for going to the beach or because they drove alone to a national park to walk their dog. Queueing to gain access to supermarkets, lockdown for months and months, etc.
In Japan what did we do? We wore masks, shut down schools, and 30% of people worked from home (lots of Japanese companies will not let employees work from home or let them take paperwork home). Then there was one two week period of "unenforceable lockdown" in March. People wear masks in Japan all the time anyway (hayfever, influenza, etc)
After that? Nothing, just the masks (as usual). Lots of people still work from home, but you should see Tokyo/Yokohama during the weekend. Everyone goes to parks, malls, eats out at restaurants, students doing homework in Starbucks, crowds at baseball, etc. I was eating out 3/4 times a week until recently (my kitchen sucked).
I really don't get this. In the UK they count all night and report results from 11pm through to 11am the next day. With many results coming in around 2-5am.
I am sure they could do it in shifts if they had to... it's pretty crazy.
I currently live in Tokyo -- I'll be heading home next year. However, I avoid the "ex-pat" areas; although, I lived in one for my first year here (Azabu). Apart from the convenience of buying certain foods (like cheese) and school access (lots of good international schools in those areas), I can't see why you would want to move to one of those places.
I moved to Tokyo to experience Japan. Not bring my culture to Japan. I couldn't use Japanese in Azabu; almost everything was tailored to speaking English. I was so glad to move out and actually have to speak Japanese to order a coffee.
I think anyone with a brain would realise the economy "crashed" because of coronavirus lockdowns, etc. It's happened everywhere in the world, but I guess Japan, China, Europe, the UK etc all "crashed" because of Trump too.
According to the crooked polls, Trump is "doing better" than against Hillary A
CBS poll gave it to Biden...
Of those polled, 48% say Biden won, while 41% say the title should go to Trump and 10% saw the night as a tie.
But, compare that to the first Hillary debate:
After the first debate, a CNN/ORC poll found that 62 percent of those who watched thought Clinton won – only 27 percent awarded the victory to Trump.
Tokyo is crazy. I can leave my bike ($2000 Cyclocross bike) outside unlocked in central Tokyo and no-one will touch it. Back home that would be taken immediately, even if you put D-Locks on it.
People leave their phones on coffee shop tables as they make an order... those would be taken too.
I dropped my wallet, went to the police station and got a call the next morning. My wallet was handed in -- with all the cash still in it.
こんにちは!
Japanese news is much more balanced than US/UK news. They actually discuss his policies (especially foreign policy) whilst I am used to "Orange man bad", "Trump promotes racism", etc from back home.
I don't really talk to people about politics (I can't vote here, so it's nice in a way) but I can understand them liking his anti-China policies.
