I know Chauvin didn’t kill Floyd and his knee was just on his back, but when the screaming crowd started to form around him, yelling, “Stop! You’re killing him! Stop! You’re killing him!”, all of them videotaping it for social media, why did he just... stare off into space with a dazed look in his eyes for nine minutes?

Doesn’t that seem like a valid question?

I’m not saying he needed to jump up and let Floyd go. But instead of just staring into the camera saying nothing, he could have leaned down and spoken to Floyd. “Are you okay? Are you going to stop resisting?” He could have shifted his knee and continued to assert pressure on Floyd’s back with his arms. He could have done all sorts of little things that would not have created such a controversial videotape.

I mean it was like Chauvin went into some kind of fugue state or something. It was really weird. And yet how would he not know this situation was escalating and could come back to bite him. He literally had a crowd of people around him screaming, “He can’t breathe! You’re killing him!” Yes, the toxicology and coroner reports show the crowd was wrong, but it’s still an angry crowd forming into an angry mob. A smart police officer could have handled that in a way that was less enraging to the crowd.

This is why I think the whole thing was staged and Chauvin was in on it (I don’t even think George Floyd is dead). But even rejecting that theory (which could be wrong), it still doesn’t make sense why Chauvin acted like such a dazed apathetic moron.

maybe because he is a low level beat cop and not a media manipulating super star genius

"smart police officers" aren't YouTube stars - they are cops; they implement the stupid rules of our stupid society using the threat of violence or actual violence to ensure the will of the legislature is carried out by the courts.

Yeap. Everyone you know is racist by virtue of being white. Even you. How do we apologize for our whiteness? It’s almost like we were born this way and shouldn’t be judged by the color of our skin. How much in taxes should I tithe to the government and how many hail Pelosi’s should I say? Where is the reparations jar? How many Covid Vaccines do I need to take and how many masks should I wear? Is father Fauci going to bless our July 4th feasts or should we cancel this year? Oh please perfect government spaghetti monster in the sky protect me from my racism and whiteness Amen and Awomen.

He knew what he was doing was technically in-line with policy and that he did not have to acquiesce to the crowd’s angry demands. He has very likely been video recorded and jeered at by angry crowds many times before, and never did it end in tragedy. Why was he blankly staring off? He was probably thinking about what to order for his next meal or maybe just daydreaming. It was just another day on the job, until it wasn’t.

Chauvin was following crowd control and de-escalation training, by not engaging the hostile crowd.

It was covered in the trial.

Every one here saying anything other than Chauvin should have been innocent obviously watched none of the trial or new evidence.

I don't think it's as complicated as you make it seem. Yeah, Chauvin was an idiot. But I think the simple matter is that kneeling on people's necks was 100% within the handbook so he knew he wasn't doing anything wrong. Why give a shit if people are filming if you know you're doing everything by the book?

Let's also not forget that it was probably silly to think Floyd would die. I'm sure Chauvin has been in this exact situation several times before and it was always fine. Who knew Floyd had heart disease or was ODing? If Floyd had lived this never would've even made the news.

i think one reason you give a shit is because, well, look what fucking happened. not giving a shit, as you just suggested, is stupid, because, well, again, look what fucking happened. we live in a world where things are taken out of context if it makes a black look like a victim. chauvin lived in that world. he should've known those vids would be blasted on the media. you can say 'so what?' but that's like saying 'why shouldn't you play russian roulette with a loaded gun? so what if it kills you! who cares!'

another reason he should have maybe gave a shit about public perception is because whether we want to acknowledge it or not, public perception is part of the cops' jobs. they should want people in a community to trust them. showing some care and consideration could go a little way in accomplishing that. i'm not saying he deserved a guilty verdict for being an uncaring asshole. but he clearly is a bit of an uncaring asshole.

Except this is how 100% of their interactions with the public go. Every time they have to get aggressive to control a black person, there will be a dozen black people on the sideline screaming at them to go away and that they didn't do nothin. If they had to "give a shit" every single time they'd never be able to do their job, and they certainly wouldn't be able to keep themselves safe.

I agree with the general sentiment I see a lot here - it's time for cops to just stop. People want a no-police nation, let them have it. It's too dangerous to be police right now.

you're talking about other hypothetical situations now. i agree, things are going to be more and more fucked up, going forward. but in this particular case, the guy had something like 8-9 minutes to show that he gave a shit, with a guy who was pretty much under control. don't try and conflate that with some other situation like a guy actively attacking a cop or whatever. 8 to 9 minutes to, at the very absolute least, try to LOOK like chauvin gave a shit, to all the people surrounding and watching.

you keep saying 'no man he shouldn't do that' but his ass is going to prison. you can live your life without acknowledging reality and in accordance with how things should be. but they aren't that way. and following your personal philosophy got this guy in prison. i'm not saying floyd wasn't fucked up or anything like that. but all chauvin had to do, at least once or twice in that span of 480 or so seconds, was ease off with the knee, and ask the guy if he's ok, try to talk to him, pretend he gave a shit about a human who was probably dying of an OD and had already quit fighting.

until we live in the civil war, this is the reality we live in. ignore it at your peril. at this point all cops should just retire, honestly. is the correct answer.

And like, aside from the riots, he really fucked himself over. He must be thinking now, what if as soon as that chick started screaming, “You’re killing him! He can’t breathe!” I had lifted my knee, continued to assert pressure on his back, then changed my position and leaned down and asked Floyd if he was okay? Like that literally might have been all that was needed to neutralize the outrage. It was the weird frozen pose and dazed out look Chauvin had that was driving those people crazy watching it. Just the smallest shift in body position could have changed all of it. Now someone might say, “Standard protocol. Too risky to move at all at that point, dude.” But it’s like okay sure, whatever. A slight shift in position would have been a disaster. Tell yourself that if you want but I don’t buy it.

the guy was basically on the ground and had stopped resisting and was just freaking out, probably knowing he was dying (at least it sounds to me like he was afraid he was dying from a drug od), so yeah chauvin had every reason to ease up a bit and show just a tiny amount of humanity instead of having this dickhead cop mentality of 'fuck you people this is none of your concern'. so yeah, i agree, totally. again, he doesn't deserve being found guilty of murder, but he didn't give a shit how what he was doing looked like, in THIS CLIMATE. what he did was just plain fucking stupid.
